Revision Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty, which creates an aesthetic appearance and eliminates functional problems by eliminating deformities and deformities in the nose, may not always result in success.

This may be due to complications that may develop during the operation, or it may occur due to the patient's demands being not met correctly.

In such cases, a second operation is required to eliminate the problems, and this second operation is called revision rhinoplasty.

If rhinoplasty operations are unsuccessful, revision rhinoplasty operation can be performed 9 to 12 months later.

What is Revision Rhinoplasty?

Undesirable results of previously performed rhinoplasty operations can be eliminated with revision rhinoplasty. The need for revision rhinoplasty, also called secondary rhinoplasty, may occur in 5 to 15 percent of rhinoplasty operations.

The necessity of revision rhinoplasty may have arisen due to the lack of patient satisfaction, even if no mistakes were made by the doctor. The said dissatisfaction may be caused by irregularities on the back of the nose or an asymmetrical appearance at the tip of the nose. Although these are minor problems, they can be eliminated with 30 to 40 minutes of applications performed within the scope of revision rhinoplasty. In some cases, these minor problems can turn into major problems and create a variety of functional problems, including respiratory problems. Problems affecting breathing are usually caused by deteriorations in cartilage and bone structure, asymmetries or deformities. The duration of revision rhinoplasty operations applied to eliminate major problems can vary between 3 hours and 6 hours.

If rhinoplasty operations are unsuccessful, revision rhinoplasty operation can be performed 9 to 12 months later.

Why is Revision Rhinoplasty Applied?

The most common reason for needing revision rhinoplasty after rhinoplasty operations is wrong surgeon selection. In addition to choosing the wrong surgeon, the situations that will require revision rhinoplasty can be listed as follows:

  • The tip of the nose becomes tighter or narrower than desired,
  • Enlargement of the tip of the nose or asymmetry formation,
  • Sagging of the tip of the nose or a short and upturned appearance,
  • An asymmetrical appearance due to the enlargement of the nostrils,
  • Respiratory problems due to collapse of the side walls of the nose,
  • The fact that the arch on the back of the nose could not be removed in line with the patient's demands,
  • Collapse caused by excessive or insufficient removal of the cartilage belt.

All these are valid reasons for revision rhinoplasty. However, in addition to all these, the following reasons may also necessitate revision rhinoplasty:

  • Insufficient experience of the surgeon,
  • Unrealistic patient expectations
  • The patient's post-operative nasal trauma
  • Surgeon goals are overly ambitious.

Failure to achieve the desired appearance with rhinoplasty, for whatever reason, creates a necessity for revision rhinoplasty.

How is Revision Rhinoplasty Applied?

If revision rhinoplasty is to be performed due to insufficient cartilage tissue, extra cartilage is needed. Usually, after rhinoplasty, the excess part of the cartilage in the patient's nose is removed and there is not enough cartilage in the patient's nose for revision rhinoplasty. In such cases, the cartilage tissue needed can be taken from the ear or rib. If deemed necessary by the surgeon, a substance produced in a laboratory environment and very similar to cartilage can be used. Open and closed revision rhinoplasty applications can be successfully completed without the need for a third operation. The only criterion here is the choice of specialist surgeon.

Things to Know About Revision Rhinoplasty

If the rhinoplasty operation is successful, revision rhinoplasty is unnecessary. The following points are important for the success of the rhinoplasty operation and for the necessity of revision rhinoplasty not to arise:

  • Correctly determining the patient's expectations about the defects in the nose and deciding on the correct application methods by the surgeon,
  • There is no uncertainty about the surgical techniques to be applied by the surgeon,
  • All structural features, including the patient's condition and skin structure, have been correctly understood and methods have been developed accordingly,
  • Proper management of the healing process in order to prevent conditions such as infection and trauma.

In order to eliminate all these problems, it is important for patients to choose a specialist surgeon and request a digital rehearsal from the selected surgeon.

What Are the Risks That May Occur After Revision Rhinoplasty?

Failure of rhinoplasty operations necessitates revision rhinoplasty operations. However, revision rhinoplasty applications without the right choice of surgeon also involve some risks. These risks can be listed as follows:

  • Regularly recurring nosebleeds
  • Numbness or loss of sensation in or around the nose,
  • Difficulty breathing through the nose,
  • Remaining traces in the application area,
  • Formation of an asymmetrical image in the nose,
  • swelling, pain or color change in the nose,
  • In case of using grafts during the application, allergy development against these substances.

Revision rhinoplasty is performed only if the rhinoplasty operation is unsuccessful. Therefore, it is necessary to work with a specialist and expert surgeon in all aesthetic operations, including rhinoplasty and revision rhinoplasty.
