Breast Reduction

In women, having breasts that are larger than necessary can create aesthetic problems, as well as physical problems that can cause other diseases. It is also possible that this situation creates mental problems.

Breast reduction surgeries, which are considered a risk-free procedure, can be performed together with breast lift operations so that women can talk about the appearance they desire.

Thus, on the one hand, physical problems are eliminated, on the other hand, aesthetic concerns are eliminated.

Breast reduction surgeries, which are considered a risk-free procedure, can be performed together with breast lift operations so that women can talk about the appearance they desire.

What is Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction surgery, called reduction mammoplasty, is effective in eliminating functional and aesthetic defects. The operation is performed to eliminate conditions such as asymmetry or sagging due to the large size of the breasts. With the breast reduction operation, the breasts gain a standard size, so women do not have difficulty in finding suitable clothes. This directly helps to eliminate psychological problems such as lack of self-confidence.

In order to calculate the degree of sagging of the breasts, the nipples and the breast fold line are examined. While the cases where the nipples stay above the fold line are considered normal, cases where they are aligned or below are considered as sagging. In other words, it is concluded that the lower the nipples are below the fold line, the greater the sagging. In cases where the breasts are larger than normal and drooping, the most common physical problems are back and neck pain, as well as spine problems. At the same time, under the breasts do not breathe and sweat due to sagging. This can cause these areas to become nappy or open wounds over time. On the other hand, the size of the breasts is directly proportional to the risk of developing breast cancer. That is, the greater the size, the greater the risk.

For What Purposes Is Breast Reduction Surgery Performed?

The most common causes that can result in sagging breasts are: Breastfeeding after pregnancy, aging, hormonal imbalances and gravity. In addition, overweight people may also experience problems such as growth, sagging or asymmetry. Another reason is various underlying diseases. In addition to all these, we can list other conditions that may cause breast reduction surgeries as follows:

  • aesthetic concerns,
  • Relief from shoulder, neck and back pain
  • To prevent the occurrence of humpback and similar spine problems,
  • To prevent problems such as rash and wound formation,
  • To minimize the risk of fungal and infection formation,
  • Getting rid of the pressure created by the bra straps,
  • Being able to do daily activities that are difficult to do in a much easier way.

Scars are likely to remain after breast reduction surgery. Therefore, it is not recommended for people who will have scars as a problem, to apply for this surgery if the sagging of the breasts is not very large. However, in cases where cosmetic defects seriously affect social life and physical problems begin to cause serious problems, surgical breast reduction is absolutely necessary.

How is Breast Reduction Surgery Performed?

Although many people think of surgery as a last resort, there is no non-surgical treatment method to reduce breasts. Sports or exercise programs are not sufficient for erecting breasts or strengthening muscles. In order to reduce the breast volume, excess adipose tissue in the breast must be removed. There are no criteria for breast reduction surgery. Every woman who has completed her physical development can have breast reduction surgery. If there is no medical necessity, breast reduction surgery is not recommended for those under the age of 20. Things to know about the steps followed during the operation are as follows:

  • Before the operation, the patient is placed under general anesthesia.
  • Lollipop or T incision methods are preferred and applied,
  • The most basic factors that determine the method to be used are the location of the nipple, the breast tissue, the distance between the nipples and the hips and shoulders, and the structure of the skin.
  • The incision made around the nipple is circular to remove excess breast tissue in the lollipop incision,
  • During this process, if necessary, the nipple can be moved up a little,
  • After the operation is completed, a drain is inserted and stitches are placed in order to heal the area faster and to remove the accumulated blood.

If a T-incision is to be made during the procedure, the lower part of the breast is determined as the incision area. In addition, a high level of care should be taken not to cause any damage to the milk ducts during the operation. It is recommended that patients stay in the hospital for one night in case of complications that may occur after the operation. The next day, the drain is removed, the dressing is applied and the patient is discharged.

Post-Operation Considerations

After resting at home for 1 week, the patient should go to the controls at the end of this week and at the end of the second week for routine controls. In this process, the stitches are also removed. At the same time, patients may need to use creams that will allow the wounds to heal faster with the doctor's recommendation. In addition, a sports bra should be used for 6 weeks. While it takes about 1 week for patients to return to their daily life, mild stinging and tingling can be felt for 6 months to 12 months.

The number of risks that patients may encounter in breast reduction surgeries is quite low. Possible risks that may be rare include:

  • bleeding or infection,
  • Loss of sensation in the nipples,
  • Damage to the milk ducts.

Operations performed by a specialist and inexperienced surgeon may fail, and worse, more serious health problems may occur. Therefore, it is important to work with a surgeon who is an expert in the field for the success of the operation.
